The Gujarat High Court on Monday directed the state government to strictly enforce Supreme Court orders and its own circulars on noise pollution in the run-up to the Navratri festival. The hearing was adjourned to November 10.
The court was hearing a contempt plea alleging failure to comply with its March 2024 order and a 2005 Supreme Court ruling on noise limits. The petition, originally stemming from a 2022 PIL against DJ trucks in marriage processions, accused the government, police, and municipal bodies of failing to act.While the state filed an affidavit assuring compliance, the bench of Justice A S Supehia and Justice V M Pirzada voiced concern over enforcement. The judges said they could only ensure adherence to existing orders, not alter SOPs.
Making strong oral remarks, the bench said DJs had “crossed limits,” noting that blaring woofers were shaking windows, risking accidents, and even capable of “blowing up your brains.”
