Varsity allows computer-based test for speech & hearing impaired candidate
A Gujarat Technological University (GTU) student with speech and hearing impairment, who faced difficulties in writing pen-and-paper exams, has prompted the university to revise its examination policy for differently abled students.
At its academic council meeting on Tuesday, GTU decided to set up special committees to assess individual cases and allow computer-based exams where required.
Registrar K.N. Kher said the move followed a case in which a deaf and mute student, unable to use a writer and struggling with written exams, was found proficient in coding and academics. “We formed a committee to evaluate his condition. Based on its recommendation, we permitted him to take the exam on computer and framed a broader policy for students with disabilities,” he said.

Undergraduate option: Engineering students who complete all academic requirements for a bachelor’s degree but fall short of credits for a minor or honours programme may now opt to graduate with a regular degree at convocation.
