Ahmedabad witnessed heavy downpours on Sunday, with the city average at 2.5 inches and Ranip recording the highest at 3.5 inches. More than 300 locations across the city reported severe waterlogging, disrupting daily life.
Intense showers hit overnight and continued through the day, with Naroda, Kotarpur, and Hanspura each receiving an inch of rain within an hour. Zone-wise rainfall ranged from 1.45 inches in the east to 2.5 inches in the north and west. The city’s cumulative rainfall this monsoon has now touched nearly 40 inches.
The Vasna Barrage reported a water level of 131 feet. For the first time since 2017, over 1 lakh cusecs were released into the Sabarmati, submerging the riverfront walkway by morning. Authorities opened 27 barrage gates, releasing 93,958 cusecs, while Dharoi and Sardar Sarovar dams contributed additional inflows.
Low-lying areas including Maninagar, Khokhra, Naroda, Vatva, Thaltej, Sarkhej, and Isanpur were worst hit, with knee-deep flooding, submerged underpasses, and major traffic disruptions. Around 25 families from Old Vadaj and four from Vasna crematorium area were evacuated as a precaution.
The city also reported 81 cases of tree falls, 32 dangerous buildings, and six electrocution risks. A police outpost at Godrej Garden City was among the areas flooded.
The downpour brought Ahmedabad’s temperature down by 6°C to 27.7°C. The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rain for the next two days.
