The number of girls enrolling in diploma engineering courses at Gujarat’s government institutes has more than doubled in a year, rising from 6.29% in 2024 to about 18% in 2025 across 35 government polytechnic colleges.
According to a media report, the diploma engineering admissions witnessed an upward trend this year, registering 88.24 per cent admission rate compared to 84.11 per cent last year (total 22,213 seats).
Out of 19,601 students who took admission as on Tuesday when the third and final round for 35 government diploma colleges across Gujarat got over, 16,075 (82.01 per cent) are boys and 3,526 (17.99 per cent) are girls.
“Along with social media campaigns, nearly 1,000 physical awareness camps conducted in over 7,000 schools in the state helped bring an upward trend in admission for diploma engineering,” Harshad Parmar, acting member secretary of Admission Committee for Professional Diploma Courses (ACPDC).
After round two, out of 38,591 seats in 105 self-financed institutes only 9,887 were filled, registering an admission rate of 25 per cent.
As per the higher number of female takers, Bhaskar Iyer, Principal of Government Polytechnic for Girls, Ahmedabad, said, “The social media campaigns where female students of polytechnic colleges talked about their experiences and job prospects helped. These were widely shared on social media platforms and possibly helped in increasing awareness among them.”
The third round was held after 3,278 seats remained vacant in government diploma institutes after two rounds.
As many as 3,817 students applied in the third round out of which 1,168 students have been admitted. In the third round, 65 students shifted from private institutes to government institutes. After round three, 2,612 seats still remain vacant.
“As of now this is the final round. However, if the AICTE extends the date for commencement of the academic session which is August 15, the fourth round might be considered,” ACPDC authorities said.
Following the state government’s move to allow students who cleared supplementary or improvement exams to apply for diploma admissions, 4,337 candidates registered, with 2,472 securing seats.
Mechanical, civil, and instrumentation and control branches recorded strong intake. Mechanical engineering admissions rose from 88.27% to 96.38%, while civil increased from 74.44% to 87.97%.
In contrast, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) saw a drop from 72.4% to 56.78%, filling only 469 of 826 seats after the third round. Textile design admissions fell sharply from 73.33% to 34.67% (26 of 75 seats), and ceramic technology declined from 47.37% to 28.95%.
“The trend of students preferring computer and IT over mechanical and civil in the last four years has reversed. In the case of ceramic and textile, the drop in admission cannot be linked to the slump in these industries. I think not many students are aware of these courses,” Iyer told this paper.
