Gujarat has once again emerged as the leading state in India’s export landscape, contributing the highest share to the country’s total exports. At the district level, Jamnagar — known for its petroleum refining industry — secured the top rank nationwide in export volume.
According to a media report, 2024–25 report by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), Gujarat recorded exports worth ₹9.83 lakh crore, accounting for 26.6% of India’s total outbound trade. Jamnagar alone contributed ₹3.63 lakh crore to this figure.
Market Share Grows Despite Overall Export Dip
Although Gujarat witnessed a dip in total exports from ₹11.13 lakh crore in 2023–24 to ₹9.83 lakh crore in 2024–25, its share in the national export pie remains robust. The decline has been largely attributed to falling global prices of petroleum products and reduced demand for lab-grown diamonds impacting the gem and jewellery sector.
Despite this, Gujarat is expanding its export footprint into new sectors, including spacecraft and aircraft parts, ships, medical equipment, technical textiles, and railway engines — signaling a shift from traditional dominance in textiles, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and gems.
Ahmedabad Leads in Pharma; New Export Sectors Emerging
Ahmedabad has emerged as Gujarat’s leading export hub outside the petroleum sector, with pharmaceutical exports showing substantial growth. The city’s pharma exports rose from ₹33,242 crore in 2023–24 to ₹39,983 crore in 2024–25.
Noteworthy sectoral export gains include:
- Spacecraft & aircraft parts: from ₹50 crore to ₹492 crore
- Ships: from ₹4,609 crore to ₹17,135 crore
- Medical equipment: ₹5,654 crore
- Fresh vegetables: ₹4,106 crore
- Technical textiles: ₹1,150 crore
USA Remains Gujarat’s Top Export Destination
The United States continues to be Gujarat’s largest export destination, with shipments worth ₹1.54 lakh crore in 2024–25. Exports to the Netherlands and the UAE also grew, while trade with China and Singapore witnessed a marginal dip.
Gujarat’s evolving export profile reflects its adaptability and ambition to lead not just in traditional sectors, but in advanced manufacturing and high-tech goods as well.
