Amid ongoing heavy rainfall, water inflow into the Vasna Barrage on the Sabarmati River has surged to over 10,492 cusecs from the upstream Sant Sarovar reservoir. In response, authorities have released 5,917 cusecs of water downstream as a safety measure.
To manage the rising levels, four barrage gates have been opened: Gates 25, 26, and 27 have been raised by 3.5 feet each, while Gate 28 has been opened to 2 feet.
According to media report, officials have alerted concerned departments and advised downstream villages to stay cautious and take necessary safety steps.
Thanks to steady rainfall in recent weeks, reservoir levels across Gujarat have risen significantly — currently at 62% of total capacity, according to official data. Twenty-nine reservoirs have reached full capacity, including five in Kutch, four in Bhavnagar, and three in Surendranagar. Sixty-two reservoirs are between 70% and 100% full, while 38 are at 25% to 50%. However, 36 reservoirs remain below 25% capacity, raising concerns.
Authorities have placed 48 reservoirs on high alert as water levels cross 90%, with 21 under alert and another 21 on warning status, prompting close monitoring.
The Sardar Sarovar Dam, a crucial water source for the state, is currently at 60.72% capacity, as reported by Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. Region-wise water storage levels stand at 57% in North Gujarat, 66% in Central Gujarat, 61% in South Gujarat, 56% in Kutch, and 66% in Saurashtra.
With rain expected to continue, the state water resources department and disaster management teams remain on alert for any potential overflow situations. Meanwhile, farmers are optimistic as the rainfall is likely to benefit kharif crops across Gujarat.
