Unseasonal Heavy Rain Hits Ahmedabad, Vadodara: What is Behind This Sudden Weather Change

Residents of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and nearby cities in Gujarat saw a dramatic change in weather on Monday, May 5. After days of scorching heat, sudden dust storms, heavy rain, and hail brought welcome relief from high temperatures.

Big Drop in Temperatures

In Ahmedabad, the maximum temperature on May 6 dropped to 33.7°C — nearly 8 degrees below normal. The city received 19 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, and humidity rose to 78% in the morning.
Vadodara experienced similar weather, with temperatures falling to 32°C after strong thunderstorms swept through the city.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), more light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected in both cities over the next few days.

What Caused the Sudden Weather Change?

The IMD explained that the unexpected weather is due to several weather systems:

  • An upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northeast Arabian Sea near the Gujarat coast.
  • A north-south trough running from central Uttar Pradesh to southern Tamil Nadu.
  • Cyclonic circulations over parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

These systems have triggered thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hailstorms across Gujarat.

What to Expect Next

The IMD says this unusual weather will likely continue for the next few days. Here’s what residents should be ready for:

  • Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, with wind speeds up to 60–70 km/h.
  • A gradual rise in temperatures, possibly reaching 37°C by May 11.
  • Partly cloudy skies and evening rain or thundershowers.

People are advised to keep an eye on weather updates and take precautions during storms or heavy rain.
