At least 29 out of 153 diploma engineering institutes have enrolled students in single digits after the first round of admissions, according to the Admission Committee for Professional Diploma Courses (ACPDC).
Among them, nine institutes—mostly self-financed—reported zero admissions. These colleges are located in places such as Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar, Surendranagar, Dholka, Surat, and Jamnagar.
According to a media report, ACPDC data shows that in 36 government and grant-in-aid colleges, 20,820 out of 23,219 seats were allotted, and 17,843 students (77%) confirmed their admissions.
In contrast, of the 39,489 seats in 117 self-financed colleges, only 11,683 were allotted and 8,520 students (22%) confirmed their admission.
Overall, out of a total intake capacity of 62,708 seats, 32,503 seats were allotted and only 26,363 students (42%) confirmed their admission.
Member Secretary Bhaskar Iyer said the number of students opting for diploma courses has increased this year. “Our awareness efforts were centred around the target audience. More parents are finding it financially viable to enrol students in diploma courses after Class 10 rather than spend a whopping sum for Class 11 and 12 Science.”
