Ahmedabad Civil Medical Kidney Institute has just received authorisation from the State Authorization Committee to do uterus transplant surgeries.
The facility will now be able to perform uterus, kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant surgeries. This will be the first semi-government institution in the nation to provide uterus transplant services.
According to Gujarat’s 1994 Human Organ Transplantation Act, authorisation for uterus transplantation was granted.
Director of the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), Dr Vineet Mishra, said this is a big achievement as earlier in the country, uterus transplantation was possible only in private institutes.
Women who suffer with infertility may find a uterus transplant to be a blessing. Women who want to become mothers but are unable to do so because of genetic defects in the uterus may find great benefit from this transplant.
It can also be an option for women suffering from uterine dysfunctions.
Gujarat government’s State Organ and Tissue, Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) has been working hard to get more such institutes approved for more transplantation procedures. Transplant centres are functioning at 22 locations across Gujarat.
Under the government programme, The Kidney Institute will provide uterus transplant treatments at a low cost. The institute has successfully completed 587 liver, 365 kidney, 4 pancreas, and 1472 renal transplants in the last five years.
