The Assam Police have claimed that the first offence for which Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested was hurting the sentiments of a specific neighbourhood in his tweets.
“Major offence committed by Jignesh Mevani under IPC 295(a) is insulting the feelings of faith, by his tweets whereby he equated Nathuram Godse to Devata (God),” police sources said on condition of anonymity.
Nathuram Godse was the murderer of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Assam police arrested Mevani from Gujarat’s Vadgam on Wednesday evening, reportedly over a few his tweets.
A case was lodged in opposition to Mevani beneath sections 120B (prison conspiracy), part 153(A) (selling enmity between two communities), 295(A), 504 (intentional insult with intent to impress breach of peace), and sections of the IT Act. A few tweets on Mevani’s Twitter deal with usually are not seen on his feed with a message displaying that the tweets have been withheld in India primarily based on a “authorized demand”.
“This Tweet from @jigneshmevani80 has been withheld in India in response to a authorized demand,” reads the message on the Vadgam MLA’s Twitter. Mevani was taken from Gujarat to Assam’s Guwahati by the police.
