With Diwali approaching, consumers may have to spend more on festive preparations as Amul has increased the prices of ghee and butter. The price of a 1 kg ghee pack has gone up by ₹50, while a 500-gram butter pack has become costlier by ₹15. The price revision comes amid reports of limited availability of Amul cow ghee in some markets.
Revised prices of ghee and butter
Under the revised rates, a 1 kg pack of Amul ghee will now cost ₹680, up from ₹630. The price of a 500-gram ghee pouch has increased from ₹325 to ₹345.
Butter prices have also been revised. A 100-gram pack, previously priced at ₹63, will now cost ₹66, while the 500-gram pack has increased from ₹310 to ₹325.
Meanwhile, online platforms are listing cow ghee at around ₹740 per litre and buffalo ghee at ₹720 per litre, although availability remains limited in some locations.
Rising demand puts pressure on supply
The increase in demand ahead of the festive season is being cited as one of the reasons behind the price revision and supply constraints. Recent enforcement drives against the sale of adulterated ghee in Gujarat and Rajasthan have also reportedly encouraged consumers to opt for established brands.
According to the figures cited in the report, around 2 lakh kg of suspected fake ghee was seized across the two states over the past six months. Festival-related consumption is another factor, with nearly 45% of annual ghee demand reportedly concentrated during the festive period.
Retailers report shortage of cow ghee
Retailers and Amul parlour operators in cities such as Ahmedabad and Vadodara have reported difficulty in meeting consumer demand, particularly for cow ghee. The shortage is said to have become more noticeable after the Ganesh festival, with some stores in Ahmedabad also reporting low stocks of ghee and butter.
The price revision comes after the GST rate on these products was reduced from 12% to 5% in September 2025. The latest increase could add to household expenses as consumers prepare for Diwali.
