Traffic, Parking Woes Drive Ahmedabad Residents Towards Cabs, Bikes and Bicycles

Traffic, Parking Woes Drive Ahmedabad Residents Towards Cabs, Bikes and Bicycles

App-based transport and bicycle rentals are changing commuting habits as residents weigh the costs of owning a vehicle

With traffic congestion and parking difficulties becoming major challenges in Ahmedabad, residents are increasingly exploring alternatives to owning a personal vehicle.

From booking cabs and bike rides through smartphone apps to renting bicycles for short trips, changing urban lifestyles are reshaping how people commute. There was a time when the number of vehicles parked outside a house was considered a symbol of a family’s social status. Today, however, many residents are reconsidering whether owning a vehicle is worth the expense and inconvenience of navigating congested roads and finding parking spaces.

Easy booking through mobile applications has made app-based transport services a convenient option, particularly in rapidly growing cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat and Rajkot. Whether travelling to work, heading home from a railway station or airport, or covering a short distance, commuters increasingly have the option of hiring a vehicle as needed.

App-based transport gains popularity at railway stations

Statistics released by the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway indicate a gradual rise in the use of app-based transport services for reaching railway stations and completing onward journeys, commonly known as last-mile connectivity.

The growing preference for such services reflects changing commuter needs, with passengers seeking convenient ways to travel between railway stations and their homes, workplaces or other destinations.

Bicycle rentals find takers in Ahmedabad

The trend extends beyond cabs and motorbikes. Ahmedabad has also witnessed growing interest in public bicycle-sharing services.According to a study on Public Bicycle Sharing, the city recorded more than 5,77,228 bicycle rides. Bicycle usage was particularly noticeable around educational institutions and entertainment centres, with residents opting for cycles for short-distance travel, recreation and fitness. The trend highlights how rental mobility options are catering to different travel needs, from motorised transport for longer journeys to bicycles for shorter trips.

Personal vehicle or rental service: Which is more economical?

Owning a vehicle involves several recurring expenses, including the down payment, loan instalments (EMIs), insurance, fuel, parking and maintenance. In contrast, cab and bike rental services generally require payment only for the journeys undertaken. For people who commute long distances every day, owning a vehicle may be a practical option. However, those who travel occasionally or face parking constraints may find app-based transport and rental services more convenient.Ultimately, the more economical option depends on several factors, including daily travel distance, frequency of journeys, parking availability, fuel expenses and vehicle maintenance costs.

As Ahmedabad continues to expand and traffic pressures increase, residents are increasingly weighing the convenience and cost of personal vehicle ownership against the flexibility of app-based transport and rental services.
