The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for updating names in Aadhaar. The revised procedure specifies different documents and processes for correcting data-entry errors, changing surnames and making other name-related changes.
Under the new rules, applicants will need to submit specific affidavits and supporting documents depending on the type of name correction. For data-entry errors, where the correct name already appears in an identity or relationship document submitted earlier, adults will have to submit an affidavit in the prescribed Annexure-B format.
For minors, Annexure-C will apply. For surname changes following marriage or divorce, applicants will need to submit an affidavit in the Annexure-D format along with the required identity documents.
The SOP also covers cases where an ‘alias’ is mentioned in the name. Applicants seeking to remove an alias and retain only one name will need Annexure-E for adults and Annexure-F for minors, along with the prescribed supporting documents.
Gazette notification for major name changes
For major changes to a name or identity, a government Gazette notification may be required. Under the prescribed procedure, changing the first name or full name requires a Gazette notification along with an identity document showing the old name.
The SOP also includes provisions for removing ranks, posts and prefixes such as Doctor, Colonel, Shri, Smt. and Mr. from names. Such changes can be processed using the prescribed identity documents.
UIDAI generally allows two name updates. Further changes may require a Gazette notification and approval through the exceptional procedure.
