Not a single student among the top 1,000 JEE Advanced 2026 rankers in the country has taken admission to IIT Gandhinagar, while IIT Bombay has once again emerged as the top choice among high-ranking students.
After the JEE Advanced results, admissions to the 23 IITs are conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). According to the 2026 admission data, IIT Gandhinagar did not attract any student from the top 1,000 ranks.
The trend has remained similar over the past five years. In 2025, only one student among the top 1,000, 17 among the top 2,000 and 87 among the top 5,000 rankers joined IIT Gandhinagar. In 2024, just one student from the top 1,000 took admission, while no student from this group joined the institute in 2022 and 2023.
IIT Bombay remains the top choice
IIT Bombay continued to be the preferred destination for top JEE Advanced rankers. This year, 68 students from the top 100, 99 from the top 200, 183 from the top 500, 406 from the top 1,000 and 764 from the top 5,000 took admission at IIT Bombay.
IIT Gandhinagar admits 361 students
A total of 361 students joined IIT Gandhinagar this year, with girls accounting for around 20% of the batch. However, only seven students from the top 2,000 and 81 from the top 5,000 JEE Advanced rankers chose the institute.
Gujarat toppers also prefer IIT Bombay
Gujarat produces an average of four to five students among the country’s top 100 JEE Advanced rankers and around 40 to 50 among the top 1,000. However, even these high-ranking students generally prefer institutes outside Gujarat.
IIT Bombay remains a major choice among Gujarat’s toppers, with Computer Science continuing to be one of the most preferred branches.
