Bank customers across India may face disruptions in branch services as bank employee unions have called for a nationwide strike from September 28 to 30, 2026.The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced the three-day strike over several pending demands. The proposed strike may affect regular banking services at branches during the three days.The State Bank of India (SBI) has informed its customers about the proposed strike and advised them to complete important banking work before September 28.
Services such as cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque-related work and other branch-based services may be affected if employees participate in the strike.However, customers will be able to use digital banking services for many transactions. SBI customers can continue to use internet banking, YONO, mobile banking and UPI. ATMs and other cash withdrawal facilities may also remain available, depending on the situation.
Why are bank employees going on strike?
Bank employee unions are demanding the introduction of a five-day working week in the banking sector. They are also seeking the filling of vacant posts in banks, along with action on pension-related and other employee issues.Bank employees had earlier observed a nationwide strike on September 11. The unions have indicated that further action could follow if their demands are not addressed.
The unions have planned the next strike for September 28, 29 and 30. They have also warned that an indefinite strike could be considered from October 26 if the issues remain unresolved.Customers are advised to complete urgent branch-related work before the proposed strike dates and use digital banking services wherever possible. They should also check updates from their respective banks, as the availability of services may vary.
