After six rounds of admissions, Gujarat University (GU) has 34,499 vacant seats across its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes this academic year. Of the total 1.10 lakh seats, around 73,000 have been filled so far.
A university official said the additional intake approved by colleges was one of the major reasons behind the vacancies. “Colleges had sought an increase in intake expecting more students to seek admission, but the demand did not rise as anticipated,” the official said.
Several colleges offering BCom and BBA had requested an increase in their sanctioned intake before the admission process, anticipating higher demand. Based on these requests, the university approved an additional 100 to 200 seats in various courses.
After the regular admission process through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal, GU conducted a university-level admission round to help colleges fill the remaining seats. Colleges were later permitted to admit students through the GCAS process against the vacant seats.
