Nepal on Alert as China Warns Lake Could Burst Within 72 Hours

Nepal on Alert as China Warns Lake Could Burst Within 72 Hours

Nepal is facing the possibility of another major flooding event as a natural barrier lake has formed near the Nepal-Tibet border following a landslide, raising concerns over a potential breach.

China’s Ministry of Water Resources has issued a warning about the lake, saying water levels have risen significantly and the natural barrier could give way if more water enters the formation over the next few days.

Up to 3 Million Cubic Metres of Water Could Enter

According to information cited by Chinese state media, around 2 million cubic metres of water had accumulated in the barrier lake by Thursday morning. Officials estimate that another 3 million cubic metres could flow into the lake over the next three days, increasing pressure on the natural barrier.

Chinese authorities are monitoring the situation through satellite observations and hydrological modelling. The next 72 hours are considered particularly important as officials assess the possibility of further rainfall and rising water levels.

Authorities are also assessing the potential impact on downstream and low-lying areas in case the natural barrier collapses.

Where Has the Barrier Lake Formed?

The natural lake reportedly developed after a landslide near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers in the border region.

Both rivers originate in Tibet and merge before entering Nepal, where the watercourse is known as the Bhotekoshi River. The Bhotekoshi later becomes an important tributary of the Trishuli River.

A breach of the barrier could therefore send a large volume of water downstream, potentially affecting settlements and infrastructure along the river system.

Fresh Concern for Rescue Operations

The warning comes as Nepal continues rescue and relief operations following Wednesday’s devastating floods in Rasuwa district.

The Bhotekoshi River caused extensive damage in areas including Timure and Syafrubesi, affecting roads, bridges and buildings. Security forces and rescue teams are continuing to search for people reported missing, while authorities have restricted traffic on affected routes and evacuated people from vulnerable areas.

Officials now face the added challenge of monitoring the newly formed barrier lake while rescue operations remain underway. Any sudden breach could trigger another surge downstream, posing an additional threat to communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
