A railway food-safety inspection in Ahmedabad has uncovered a major lapse at the base kitchen preparing meals for the Swarn Jayanti Rajdhani Express, where officials found 1,383 packets of expired food products.
Following the inspection, railway authorities fined the company responsible for supplying food to passengers ₹10 lakh for violating food-safety and railway catering norms.
1,383 Expired Packets Found
The Railway Food Vigilance Force, formed by the Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), conducted surprise inspections at railway premises and trains for the second consecutive day.
During a check at the Rajdhani Express base kitchen, officials found a large stock of food items that had passed their expiry dates. In total, 1,383 expired packets were found stored for use in preparing or serving meals to passengers.
₹10 Lakh Penalty Imposed
The discovery has raised concerns over food quality and passenger safety.Railway authorities imposed a ₹10 lakh penalty on the food-supplying company for violating prescribed standards and initiated further action.
The inspection was part of the Ahmedabad railway division’s ongoing food-quality checks to ensure that meals served to passengers meet required safety and hygiene standards.
