The Gujarat government has permitted the registration and modification of motorcycles fitted with sidecars to improve mobility and transportation options for persons with disabilities.
The Transport Commissioner has directed all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and Assistant Regional Transport Offices (ARTOs) across the state to implement the guidelines issued by the Central Government.
The decision, taken under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, is aimed at providing safer and more accessible transport options for persons with disabilities. Under the new provisions, eligible persons can register and modify motorcycles with sidecars in accordance with prescribed safety and technical standards.
For persons with cognitive or mental disabilities, the guidelines specify that the vehicle must be operated by a legal guardian or an authorised driver holding a valid driving licence.
The regulations also place emphasis on safety. Sidecar-fitted motorcycles will have a maximum permitted speed of 40 kmph. The use of helmets will be mandatory, while sidecars must be equipped with seat belts. Valid insurance coverage will also be compulsory.
The move is expected to provide greater independence and safer mobility to persons with disabilities while ensuring that modified two-wheelers comply with prescribed road safety requirements.
