India marked its 600th Test with a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday, with Devdutt Padikkal producing a magnificent century and Manav Suthar claiming a match-winning 10-wicket haul.
The milestone offers an opportunity to look back at a remarkable transformation that began with India’s international debut in 1932. Over nearly a century, Indian Test cricket has evolved from a developing side into one of the leading forces in the longest format.
From the era of CK Nayudu to the dominance of Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, several generations of Indian cricketers have played a role in shaping the team’s identity and influencing the evolution of Test cricket.
India’s bowling attack has undergone perhaps the most significant transformation. During the 1960s and 1970s, India was renowned for its formidable spin quartet of Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan. The modern era, however, has seen India develop a potent combination of pace and spin.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have carried forward India’s fast-bowling tradition, while Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have maintained the country’s reputation for quality spin.
India has also consistently produced outstanding batsmen. Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli have been among the country’s most prolific run-scorers, setting benchmarks across generations.
India’s Test journey in six phases
India’s record across every 100 Tests reflects the gradual improvement in its fortunes:
- 1st to 100th Test: 10 wins, 40 defeats and 50 draws — win-loss ratio of 0.25
- 101st to 200th Test: 25 wins, 32 defeats and 43 draws — win-loss ratio of 0.78
- 201st to 300th Test: 21 wins, 26 defeats, one tie and 52 draws — win-loss ratio of 0.80
- 301st to 400th Test: 32 wins, 31 defeats and 37 draws — win-loss ratio of 1.03
- 401st to 500th Test: 42 wins, 28 defeats and 30 draws — win-loss ratio of 1.50
- 501st to 600th Test: 57 wins, 31 defeats and two draws — win-loss ratio of 1.83
The numbers underline India’s transformation. From the 301st Test onwards, its win-loss ratio remained above one. Across Tests 301 to 600, India recorded 131 victories, suffered 90 defeats and drew 69 matches.
The contrast with India’s first 300 Tests is stark. During that period, India won only 56 matches, lost 98 and drew 145, with a win percentage of around 18 per cent.
Captains who changed India’s fortunes
The 21st century brought another major shift in Indian Test cricket. Captains such as Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli each played an important role in taking the team forward.
Ganguly backed young players and helped instil greater confidence in overseas conditions. Dhoni guided India to the No. 1 Test ranking, while Kohli placed a strong emphasis on fitness, fast bowling and sustained performance.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, India has won 126 of its 270 Tests, lost 79 and drawn 65, giving it a win percentage of more than 46 per cent.
India’s record away from home has also improved. In 146 Tests outside the country during this period, India has recorded 51 wins, 59 defeats and 36 draws, with a win percentage of 34.93 per cent. The period has included historic series victories in Australia, England and New Zealand.
Virat Kohli remains India’s most successful Test captain, having led the team to 40 victories in 68 Tests after taking over the captaincy during the 2014 Australia tour in the absence of the injured MS Dhoni. Under Kohli, India recorded its historic first Test series victory in Australia in 2018-19 and registered seven Test wins in SENA conditions, the most by an Asian captain.
How India sealed its 600th Test
India began the 600th Test by opting to bat first and posted 462, powered by Padikkal’s 167 off 230 balls, including 15 fours and a six. KL Rahul contributed 82 off 175 balls, while Dhruv Jurel scored 51 off 68 deliveries.
Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets for 109 runs, while Keshara Nuwantha claimed three wickets.
Sri Lanka struggled early in their first innings, falling to 90/5. Niroshan Dickwella and Sonal Dinusha then revived the innings with a 146-run partnership. Dickwella scored 80 off 115 balls, while Dinusha made 100 off 168 deliveries.
India’s spin attack eventually ended the resistance, with Suthar claiming four wickets as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 284, conceding a first-innings lead of 178 runs.
Sri Lanka fought back with the ball in India’s second innings. Rishabh Pant top-scored with 66 off 69 balls, while Padikkal and Rahul added 44 and 35 respectively. India was bowled out for 193, setting Sri Lanka a target of 372.
Asitha Fernando took four wickets for 31 runs, while Jayasuriya claimed three for 43. Sri Lanka again stumbled early in the chase, reaching 47/4. Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinusha then added 91 runs to briefly revive their hopes. De Silva scored 59 off 151 balls, while Dinusha made 84 off 128.
Once Dinusha was dismissed as the seventh wicket, Sri Lanka’s resistance faded rapidly. Suthar ran through the lower order to finish with a 10-wicket match haul as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 206.
Prasidh Krishna also produced an impressive spell, taking two wickets for 16 runs in 10 overs, while Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja picked up one wicket each.
India’s 165-run victory gave it a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series, making its 600th Test another landmark in a journey that has taken the team from early struggles to sustained success on the international stage.
