The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Food Safety Department sealed the canteen at St Xavier’s Loyola School near Vijay Char Rasta on Tuesday after finding several food safety violations.
During a surprise inspection on August 18, officials found the kitchen and cooking equipment in poor and unhygienic condition. Workers preparing food were also found without gloves or masks. As many as 12 expired food items were reportedly found at the canteen.
The canteen operator also failed to produce a valid food licence or registration. Following the inspection, the AMC sealed the canteen under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Officials said the canteen cannot reopen until it fulfils the required food safety and licensing rules.
The inspection is part of a wider AMC campaign to check school canteens after a piece of glass was recently found in food served at a school canteen in the city.
As part of the drive, officials also inspected the canteens at Podar International School in Chandkheda and Adani Vidya Mandir in Makarba. Food samples collected from these canteens have been sent to a laboratory for testing.
AMC officials said strict action will continue against school canteens found compromising students’ health and food safety standards.
