Karnamukteshwar Mahadev Temple in Ahmedabad’s Sarangpur area is regarded by devotees as one of the city’s oldest and most sacred Shiva temples. Believed to be around 1,100 to 1,200 years old, the temple is traditionally associated with King Karnadev Solanki of Patan, after whom the shrine is named.
With Lord Shiva worshipped with special devotion during Shravan, large numbers of devotees visit the historic temple to offer prayers and seek blessings.
Mythological history of the temple
The ancient temple is known for its rich history and religious significance. According to local belief, a precious supernatural gem was once placed on the Shivling at the temple. It is said that the gem was later damaged by Mughal invaders. Several ancient idols are also preserved within the temple complex.
Devotees have strong faith in the shrine and believe that prayers offered here can help overcome obstacles in important matters. According to popular belief, devotees whose important work has been delayed or remained incomplete can worship Lord Shiva by offering milk, bilva leaves and a lotus, seeking his blessings for its completion.
Special worship during Shravan
The temple remains immersed in devotional activities throughout Shravan. Various religious programmes, including Rudri Path, Laghu Rudra, bilva leaf seva, lotus puja, Mahamrityunjay Mantra chanting and yajnas, are organised during the month.
Every Monday of Shravan, free puja and Mahamrityunjay Path are also arranged for devotees. A large number of Shiva devotees participate in these rituals and seek the blessings of Karnamukteshwar Mahadev.
