Four doctors have been suspended following the suicide of 29-year-old resident doctor Harsh Pandya at a government medical college in Surat.The suspended doctors are Microbiology Department Head Dr Sumaiya Mulla, Dr Sangeeta Rajde, Dr Yogita Mistry and Dr Latika Purohit. The action follows an inquiry into allegations of harassment and ragging connected with the incident.
Minister of State for Health Praful Pansheriya appealed to students facing harassment, ragging or threats related to examinations not to lose hope or take any extreme step. He urged them to immediately approach their Dean, College Director, the minister or the state government for help.
Pansheriya assured students that the government stands with them and will take steps to protect their safety, education and future.The college administration has also reviewed the incident and submitted a report to the state government. It has been asked to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, Khataodara police have seized Harsh Pandya’s mobile phone and laptop as part of the investigation. An FSL team is expected to examine his hostel room and belongings. Further legal action, including registration of a police complaint, is also likely.
