Ahmedabad police have uncovered an unusual method being used to smuggle liquor into the city. A bootlegger was allegedly hiding liquor bottles inside geysers and an inverter to avoid detection during night police checks.
Acting on a tip-off during a night patrol, the Sola police stopped a suspicious car and began checking it. At first, the vehicle appeared to be carrying only a geyser and an inverter. However, the police became suspicious and decided to inspect the appliances.When the geyser was opened, the police were surprised to find bottles of expensive foreign liquor hidden inside. The driver, identified as Mohammad Naved Ansari, was detained.
Five more geysers found at accused’s houseDuring questioning, Ansari allegedly told police that more liquor was hidden at his house in Vasantnagar Township in Gota.Police raided the house along with the accused and recovered five more geysers. On opening them, officers again found liquor bottles concealed inside.
According to police, the accused was allegedly bringing liquor from outside Gujarat and using geysers and electrical appliances to transport and sell it illegally in the city.81 liquor bottles seizedPolice seized a total of 81 bottles of foreign liquor worth around ₹1.33 lakh. Including the car and other seized items, the total value of the confiscated property was estimated at around ₹2.40 lakh.
Police said Ansari had previously been booked in prohibition-related cases as well. The latest case has exposed an unusual method allegedly adopted by bootleggers to evade police checks.
