Gujarat Expands Medical College Capacity by 300 MBBS Seats

Ahmedabad is set to see an increase in medical college capacity as Gujarat adds 300 MBBS seats this academic year. This adjustment raises the total number of seats across government and private medical colleges from 7,200 to 7,500. The expansion primarily affects private institutions following approvals from the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Four private medical colleges have each received an additional 50 seats. Two other institutions also had their seat counts restored after reductions in previous years. Notably, the medical college in Visnagar will grow from 150 to 200 seats, while Nadiad and Surat’s facilities will similarly expand by 50 seats each.

In Surendranagar, the local medical college’s capacity will increase from 100 to 150 seats. Private colleges in Bharuch and Amreli are experiencing a comeback too, restoring their seat numbers from a past low of 150 back up to their original count of 200.

This surge in available spots comes just as medical admissions begin throughout Gujarat, following the recent announcement of NEET re-test results. While no new government medical colleges have opened recently, private institutions continue growing alongside GMERS models.

Experts predict that merit cut-offs could drop this year due to fewer candidates qualifying for admissions—about 12,000 less than last year’s figures. Admission trends are expected to clarify around mid-August as more data emerges.
