The Surat district administration has declared a holiday for all schools, anganwadis, colleges and ITIs on Saturday, August 1, following the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of heavy rainfall. The decision has been taken to ensure the safety of students.
This will be the second consecutive day that educational institutions across the Surat Municipal Corporation area, municipalities and rural parts of the district will remain closed due to heavy rain.
Following the District Magistrate’s notification issued on July 31, the district education department has directed all institutions to strictly comply with the order. Schools have also been informed that academic work lost due to the holidays will be compensated on a local holiday or another suitable day.
Meanwhile, continuous rainfall has disrupted normal life across Surat and South Gujarat. Several low-lying areas have been flooded, while the Bhedawad creek has overflowed. Waterlogging has been reported from VIP Road, Pandesara, Katargam and Dabholi. In the Limbayat area, a section of the road has been barricaded after a cave-in.
Considering the severity of the situation, the district administration has also ordered factories across the district to remain closed for two days. An Army team has been deployed from Vadodara to Surat to assist with relief and rescue operations.
The administration has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain in safe places until the heavy rainfall subsides.
