The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Ahmedabad, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated spells of extremely heavy rainfall, is likely in the city until 8.30 am on August 2.
In view of the forecast, the Ahmedabad district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Friday, while anganwadis will remain closed until August 3.
The city recorded an average of 19 mm of rainfall between 6 am and 3 pm on Friday. According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Asarwa received the highest rainfall at 34.5 mm, followed by Kalupur and Chandlodiya with 33 mm each, and Ranip with 31 mm.
Several areas, including Chandkheda, Motera, Bodakdev, Science City, Gota, Thaltej, Memnagar, Dudheshwar, Naroda and Kotarpur, recorded more than 1 inch of rainfall by 3 pm.
As a precaution, the AMC has cancelled the Jaya Parvati Vrat night events at Kankaria Lake and the Sabarmati Riverfront. Public entry to all lake gardens has also been prohibited until August 1.
Meanwhile, authorities have opened 28 gates of the Vasna Barrage on the Sabarmati River to release excess water downstream.
