More than 120 student-athletes seeking admission under the sports quota in Gujarat University (GU)-affiliated colleges are still waiting for the admission process to be completed, even as inter-college sports tournaments have already begun.
According to Subhan Saiyed, spokesperson of the Gujarat State Youth Congress, admissions under the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) have progressed in other universities, but the sports quota admission process at GU remains pending. He also claimed that the university had not constituted its Sports Quota Admission Committee.
In a memorandum submitted to the university, the Youth Congress said the delay is affecting students who depend on the sports quota for higher education. Since inter-college competitions are already underway, many eligible athletes are reportedly unable to participate because their admissions have not been finalised.
The organisation alleged that GU is among the few universities where sports quota admissions are still pending. It also claimed that some talented athletes may have opted for admission elsewhere due to the uncertainty, stressing that timely admissions are crucial to support student-athletes and strengthen the state’s sports ecosystem. The memorandum urged the university to expedite the process.
However, GU in-charge Vice-Chancellor Jagdish Joshi said the Sports Quota Admission Committee has already been formed. He added that the committee is expected to meet on Friday, and a decision on the admission process is likely to be taken within the next few days.
