Heavy rainfall over the past two days has once again exposed severe waterlogging in several parts of western Ahmedabad, prompting questions over the effectiveness of the city’s stormwater drainage and sewerage network, on which more than Rs 700 crore is claimed to have been spent over the years.
Among the worst-affected areas was Bopal, where floodwaters inundated upscale residential neighbourhoods, including the Poojan Bungalows. Water entered homes, submerged roads and left several vehicles stranded, disrupting normal life and triggering frustration among residents.
The flooding has drawn attention to the city’s drainage infrastructure, particularly in premium localities known for modern civic amenities. Residents said that despite repeated instances of waterlogging during every monsoon, a lasting solution has yet to be implemented.
Several luxury homes in high-end areas such as Bopal and Ambli were also affected. According to local residents, rainwater entered ground floors, basements and gardens, causing damage to property and household belongings. Some homeowners reportedly shifted to safer locations after floodwaters remained stagnant for hours.
The situation also severely impacted traffic, with several roads becoming impassable as water accumulated across key stretches of the western suburbs.
Residents questioned why widespread flooding continues despite substantial investment in stormwater drainage and sewerage infrastructure. They have demanded greater accountability from the civic authorities and called for a comprehensive, long-term solution to the recurring problem.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has yet to issue a detailed response on the effectiveness of the existing drainage system or the measures being taken to prevent similar flooding during the ongoing monsoon season.
