While first-year (FY) classes have commenced at MS University, lectures for more than 2,000 students enrolled in the fourth-year honours programme are yet to begin. The delay has been attributed to pending appointment orders for temporary faculty members and the administration’s focus on the ongoing postgraduate (PG) admission process.
Unlike previous years, when FY classes usually began late and senior batches resumed soon after the vacation, this year the situation has been reversed. Teaching for first-year students has started, but fourth-year honours classes across several faculties, including Commerce, remain on hold.
University sources said interviews for temporary professors have already been completed, but appointment orders have not yet been issued to all selected candidates, delaying the start of the honours programme. At the same time, faculty members and administrative staff are occupied with the PG admission process, further affecting academic schedules.
More than 2,000 students across various faculties have opted for the fourth-year honours degree this year, requiring departments to make additional teaching arrangements before classes can begin.Meanwhile, the university is also considering relaxing its eligibility rules for admission to the third year (TY).
Under the existing rules, students must clear all first-year (FY) ATKT papers before being eligible for TY admission. However, students have raised objections to this requirement every year, often leading faculties to grant temporary relaxation.
Following similar demands from the Commerce Faculty, students in the Science Faculty submitted a representation to the Dean on Tuesday, urging that TY admissions be allowed even if students have pending FY ATKT papers.
University authorities are now considering permanently easing the rule, and a meeting of faculty deans is expected to be held soon to discuss the proposal.
