The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has cleared the way for widening the 700-metre stretch from Kalupur to the Sarangpur overbridge, parallel to Saraspur railway station. The existing 12.2-metre-wide road will be expanded to 30.5 metres (100 feet), requiring the acquisition or partial demolition of 184 properties.
The road-widening proposal has been pending since 2006. Notices were issued to affected property owners under Sections 212(1)(a) and 213 of the GPMC Act. After reviewing objections, the civic body rejected them, stating they were based on personal concerns rather than public interest.
The AMC will now issue notices under Section 212(2) of the GPMC Act, giving property owners 35 days to voluntarily remove the affected portions of their structures. If they fail to comply, demolition will be carried out under Section 212(3). The proposal is scheduled to be placed before the Standing Committee on Thursday.
Standing Committee Chairman Kamlesh Patel said the road widening is essential for improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion. He added that alternative arrangements have been offered to affected residents and tenants. Tenants opting for accommodation under AMC housing schemes will have the cost adjusted from the compensation payable to the original property owner, ensuring that no stakeholder is unfairly affected.
Of the 184 affected properties, 113 are residential, 47 commercial, 20 mixed-use and four religious structures. Among them, 74 residential, 37 commercial, 19 mixed-use and one religious property will be fully affected, while the remaining properties will face partial demolition.
