As thousands of families continue to battle severe flooding in Surat, a video of a breakfast gathering at the Surat Municipal Corporation’s Tapi Bhavan has triggered widespread outrage on social media. The event, held after the appointment of committee chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, has drawn criticism as many residents remain stranded without basic necessities.
For the past two days, torrential rain has caused widespread waterlogging and flash floods across the city. Thousands of homes have been inundated, damaging household belongings, disrupting electricity supply, and leaving residents struggling for drinking water, milk and other essentials.
The anger is particularly strong in Lali Nagar, Balaji Nagar, Srinathji Nagar and Sai Nagar in the Udhna area, located barely 500 metres from the BJP office. Residents say floodwater has remained in the locality for two days and allege that they have received little or no assistance despite repeatedly seeking help.
Many locals questioned the absence of political leaders during the crisis, saying they frequently visited the area during election campaigns but have not been seen since residents became trapped in floodwaters.
Amid the worsening flood situation, the viral video showing BJP office-bearers, newly appointed committee heads and their supporters attending a breakfast gathering at Tapi Bhavan has intensified public resentment. Residents say the celebrations appeared insensitive at a time when large parts of Surat remain underwater and thousands of people are waiting for relief and rescue assistance.
