Heavy overnight rain lashed Ahmedabad, inundating several parts of the city, forcing the temporary closure of three major underpasses, and leaving roads waterlogged. The downpour also exposed concerns over civic infrastructure as more than an inch of rain fell within a span of two hours.
According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the city recorded an average of 1.38 inches of rainfall between 4 pm on Saturday and 10 am on Sunday. Oganj received the highest rainfall at 2.81 inches, taking the city’s cumulative monsoon rainfall this season to 2.49 inches.
The most intense rainfall occurred between midnight and 2 am, flooding low-lying areas and disrupting traffic across several parts of the city.
Three underpasses temporarily closed
Heavy rain led to waterlogging at the Akhbarnagar, Mithakhali and Makarba underpasses, forcing civic authorities to shut them during the early hours of Sunday. After water was pumped out, all three were reopened, with the Makarba underpass resuming traffic around 7 am.
Western Ahmedabad bears the brunt
The worst-affected areas were in western and north-western Ahmedabad. The road between Vijay Char Rasta and Helmet Circle was submerged, while a section of the road near a drainage chamber partially caved in, raising safety concerns for motorists.
Residents also reported severe waterlogging on Tragad Road behind Nirma University, where stagnant rainwater remained several hours after the showers ended. The road connecting Ganesh Chowk and Uma Bhavani was submerged under knee-deep water, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters.
Civic work raises safety concerns
Fresh concerns were reported near the DK Cabin Underpass, where work on the Chandrabhaga Nala project is underway. Residents alleged that a 60–70-foot excavation had inadequate barricading. Overnight rain filled the pit with water and mud, creating a potential hazard for motorists and pedestrians.
Vasna Barrage situation stable
Despite the heavy rainfall, officials said the situation at the Vasna Barrage remained under control. At 10 am, the river level was recorded at 132.50 feet, while 600 cusecs of water was being released into the canal system. All barrage gates remained closed.
