After completing four rounds of centralised admissions through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal, the Gujarat government has allowed universities and affiliated colleges to conduct their own admission rounds to fill vacant undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats.The decentralised admission process will be held from July 6 to July 15, with institutions preparing merit lists and offering admissions based on inter-se merit.
Universities Free to Conduct Multiple Rounds
Under the revised guidelines, universities can decide how many admission rounds they wish to conduct during the 10-day period. Affiliated colleges may also organise multiple rounds until all vacant seats are filled.Colleges can either issue admission offers on consecutive days or complete a single admission cycle by releasing additional offers depending on seat availability.Institutions will be able to access students’ preference details through the GCAS portal. However, the portal will not display cut-off marks, allowing colleges and universities to decide their own cut-offs for vacant seats.
Over 6.32 Lakh Students Registered
This year, 15 government universities and 19 private universities are participating in the GCAS admission process, offering more than 5.5 lakh undergraduate seats across courses such as BA, BCom, BBA, BCA and integrated programmes.
As of Thursday evening:
More than 6.32 lakh students had registered on the GCAS portal.
Over 5.68 lakh paid the registration fee.More than 5.27 lakh submitted college preferences.
Around 5.15 lakh completed the application process.
More than 2.25 lakh students secured admission after the first four rounds.
Last year, GCAS conducted 32 admission rounds, through which over 3.30 lakh students were admitted to UG courses.
Fresh Registration from July 5
Following the declaration of the Class 12 supplementary examination results, students who pass the supplementary exams, along with those who have not yet registered, can apply through the GCAS portal between July 5 and July 14.Existing applicants will also be allowed to change or add college preferences during this period. Any changes will require them to resubmit their application.
St. Xavier’s Admission Case Still Pending
The announcement comes as St. Xavier’s College continues its legal challenge against the Gujarat government’s decision to make admissions mandatory through the GCAS portal.The minority and autonomous institution has argued before the Gujarat High Court that compulsory admissions through GCAS violate its constitutional rights under Article 30, which allows minority institutions to manage their own admission process.The case is scheduled for hearing next week. Meanwhile, students who selected St. Xavier’s through GCAS remain uncertain as the college has kept admissions on hold until the court delivers its decision.
