The Gujarat High Court has strongly criticised an advocate accused of sharing confidential information provided by his client with the opposing side in a matrimonial dispute.
Client Alleges Breach of Trust
An IT engineer from Vadodara, who appeared before the High Court in person, alleged that his lawyer leaked confidential case details to his wife and her advocate. The petitioner also submitted evidence in support of his claims, prompting the court to question the lawyer’s professional conduct.
High Court Makes Strong Remarks
During the hearing, the High Court observed that it was aware of the conduct of some advocates practising in the Vadodara Family Court. The bench remarked that if lawyers failed to show respect to judges, they could hardly be expected to remain loyal to their clients.The court also directed the petitioner to file a complaint against the advocate with the Bar Council.
Similar Allegations in Other Cases
The court was informed that the advocate had allegedly been involved in similar misconduct in three matrimonial disputes, where he was accused of switching sides and compromising the interests of his own clients.
‘Not Loyal to the Profession’
Expressing serious concern, the High Court observed that a lawyer who is not honest with the legal profession cannot be expected to deliver justice to others.The bench also criticised the alleged practice of forcing clients to continue legal representation even after they wished to change lawyers, saying such conduct damages the dignity of the legal profession for financial gain.The matter has been adjourned for further hearing next week.
