Thousands of undergraduate aspirants seeking admission to St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad, are caught in uncertainty as the legal dispute between the Gujarat government and the college over the Gujarat Common Admission Service (GCAS) remains unresolved.The state government has insisted that admissions to all undergraduate programmes must be conducted exclusively through the GCAS portal.However, St. Xavier’s, a minority institution, has continued accepting applications through its own admission portal, asserting its constitutional right to manage admissions independently. The matter is currently pending before the Gujarat High Court, but repeated adjournments have left students anxiously awaiting clarity.
Government’s Stand
The Gujarat government has repeatedly directed the college to adopt the GCAS admission process. It has also issued a public notice cautioning students that admissions granted outside the GCAS portal may not be recognised and could affect their university enrolment.
College’s Stand
St. Xavier’s College maintains that, as a minority educational institution, it enjoys constitutional autonomy in conducting its admission process. The college has advised applicants to submit applications only through its official admission portal and has informed them that merit lists and further admission procedures will remain on hold until the Gujarat High Court delivers its verdict.
Students Bear the Brunt
While the legal battle continues between the state government and St. Xavier’s College, thousands of students remain caught in the middle. With the new academic session approaching, many are still uncertain about where—or even whether—they will be able to begin their undergraduate studies.
