The renovation and repair of the historic Vasna Barrage on the Sabarmati River has been completed in a record 35 days, significantly strengthening Ahmedabad’s flood management and water regulation infrastructure ahead of the monsoon season.
The project involved replacing 19 barrage gates and repairing 10 existing gates using 460 metric tonnes of structural steel and five heavy-duty mobile cranes. Simultaneously, the civil engineering team carried out reinforcement work on the barrage’s main structure to improve its overall safety and durability.
Constructed in 1976, the Vasna Barrage underwent a major overhaul following recommendations made during a pre-monsoon inspection conducted in 2025 under the Dam Safety Act. To facilitate the renovation, the reservoir was completely emptied on April 17, 2026.
Officials noted that while such large-scale rehabilitation projects typically require four to five months for completion, the entire exercise was executed in just over a month at a cost of ₹10.15 crore.
The project was supervised by the Mechanical Branch of the state’s Water Resources Department and is expected to significantly improve the barrage’s operational efficiency, flood control capabilities and water management functions.
With both mechanical and civil works now completed, authorities have begun refilling the reservoir. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to enhance dam safety during the upcoming monsoon season while ensuring a reliable supply of irrigation water to farmers in rural areas of Ahmedabad district.
