The Integrated Control Room for Emergency Response (ICR-ER) under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a special advisory for fishermen in Gujarat following forecasts of strong winds and rough sea conditions along the state’s coastline.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), winds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely to prevail over the Gujarat coast and adjoining areas from June 20 to June 21.
Weather conditions are expected to worsen between June 23 and June 24, with wind speeds likely to increase to 40-50 kmph and gusts reaching up to 60 kmph over coastal regions of Gujarat and the Konkan coast. Similar conditions are expected to continue through June 25, resulting in rough seas and potentially hazardous conditions for fishing activities.
The advisory also highlights the possibility of adverse weather over parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal during the period.
Gujarat has a large fishing community, with over 36,000 operational fishing boats and nearly 5.86 lakh fishermen. The state contributes around 7 to 8.7 lakh metric tonnes of fish production annually, making fisheries an important sector of the state’s economy.
Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into deep-sea areas during the warning period and to closely monitor official weather updates. The advisory aims to safeguard lives, fishing vessels and property from the impact of strong winds and rough sea conditions.
