Ahmedabad Gets First Pedestrian-Activated Crossing Signal on CG Road

Ahmedabad Gets First Pedestrian-Activated Crossing Signal on CG Road

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has introduced the city’s first Pelican signal — a push-button pedestrian crossing system — on a pilot basis on CG Road near Municipal Market.

The signal has been handed over to the Ahmedabad Traffic Police for operation and monitoring.

The initiative aims to address a long-standing issue on CG Road, where heavy pedestrian movement and continuous vehicular traffic often make road crossing difficult and unsafe.

AMC and the traffic police will assess the effectiveness of the new system before deciding whether to install similar signals at other busy intersections across the city. If the pilot project proves successful, more pedestrian-activated crossings could be introduced at key traffic hotspots.

Authorities have urged pedestrians to use the facility responsibly and appealed to motorists to halt when the signal turns red for pedestrians, helping ensure safer movement for everyone.

How the Pelican Signal Works

  • Pedestrians press the walk-request button installed on the signal pole when they wish to cross the road.
  • Once activated, the system initiates a brief delay before the traffic signal turns red for vehicles, allowing pedestrians to cross safely.
  • After the crossing cycle is completed, the signal automatically switches back to green for vehicles, restoring normal traffic flow.
