The Gujarat government has allocated Rs 50 crore to upgrade 25 top-performing government colleges into model institutions, with each college receiving Rs 2 crore under a new initiative announced in the state budget.
Among the selected institutions are four colleges from the Ahmedabad region: Gujarat Commerce College in Ellisbridge, Government Science College in Gandhinagar, Government Arts and Commerce College in Kathlal, and KK Shastri Government Commerce College in Maninagar.
The funding will be used to strengthen digital infrastructure through advanced computer laboratories, e-books, digital libraries, audiobooks, automated library systems and institutional management platforms. Plans also include smart classrooms equipped with audio-visual technology, upgraded laboratories and improved research facilities.
A significant portion of the grant will be spent on developing multipurpose seminar halls with a seating capacity of 150, along with projection systems, air-conditioning and other modern amenities. Incubation centres will also be established to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship among students.
According to education department officials, the initiative is aimed at creating technology-enabled campuses and enhancing academic, research and student support infrastructure in line with national quality standards.
