Nearly 25,000 admissions at Ahmedabad’s St. Xavier’s College remain pending as the institution’s legal challenge against the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal continues before the court.
The hearing in the matter has been postponed until Thursday, further delaying clarity for thousands of students seeking admission to one of Gujarat’s most sought-after colleges.
The admission process has remained uncertain due to the ongoing dispute between St. Xavier’s College and the Gujarat government over the implementation of admissions through the state-run GCAS platform.
According to available information, more than 3,000 students have applied through the college’s independent admission portal, while over 22,000 students have selected St. Xavier’s College through the GCAS portal for various undergraduate programmes. Many of these applicants have already received admission offers in the first round of GCAS allotment.
However, the college has not accepted admissions through the GCAS system, leaving thousands of students awaiting a final decision. Merit-based candidates are also facing uncertainty as it remains unclear whether admissions will ultimately be conducted through the college’s own process or under the GCAS framework.
The matter is currently pending before the High Court, which has deferred the hearing until Thursday.
Meanwhile, the second round of undergraduate admissions under GCAS was scheduled to begin on Tuesday. The Gujarat government has also added 24 newly approved colleges to the second round of admissions, allowing students to consider alternative institutions while the St. Xavier’s issue remains unresolved.
