The Gujarat government has introduced a range of technology-focused courses across Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in a bid to equip youth with skills needed for emerging industries and improve employment opportunities in the state.
According to an official statement issued on Saturday, the new courses have been launched in 73 ITIs, including 67 government-run institutes, two grant-in-aid institutions and four self-financed institutes.
The newly introduced programmes cover several high-growth sectors and include Artificial Intelligence (AI) Programming Assistant, Drone Pilot, Solar Technician (Electrical), Information Technology, Mechanic Electric Vehicle, Advanced CNC Machining, Additive Manufacturing Technician (3D Printing), Technician Mechatronics, Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Programmer, IoT Technician (Smart Agriculture), IoT Technician (Smart City), and Smartphone Technician-cum-App Tester.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at building a skilled workforce for future industries, particularly in renewable energy, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing.
Focus on Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicles
The government highlighted Gujarat’s strong position in the renewable energy sector, noting that the state contributes 16.5 per cent of India’s total renewable energy capacity. As of December 2025, Gujarat’s installed renewable energy capacity stood at 42.583 GW.
The state currently ranks first in the country in overall renewable energy capacity and wind power generation, and second in solar power capacity.
Officials said the growing solar energy sector offers substantial employment opportunities, and the introduction of Solar Technician courses will help create a pool of trained professionals to meet industry demand.
Similarly, the rapid growth of electric vehicles is expected to generate significant demand for skilled maintenance and repair technicians.
EV Boom Driving Demand for Skilled Technicians
Gujarat’s electric vehicle market witnessed strong growth earlier this year. In March 2026, the state recorded 12,729 EV registrations, marking a 75.5 per cent increase compared to 7,252 registrations in March 2025.
Registrations of pure electric vehicles rose by 111 per cent during the same period, increasing from 5,271 units to 11,126 units.
Officials said the new Mechanic Electric Vehicle course has been designed to address the increasing need for trained technicians as EV adoption continues to rise across the state.
To support practical training, the government has also supplied 40 electric vehicles to ITIs for hands-on learning and skill development.
Expanding Technical Education Network
Gujarat currently has a network of 560 ITIs with a combined intake capacity of 2,18,736 seats. This includes 288 government ITIs with 1,77,912 seats, 100 grant-in-aid institutes offering 16,200 seats and 171 self-financed ITIs with 24,624 seats.
At present, ITIs across the state offer 138 vocational courses covering traditional and modern trades, including Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA), Fitter, Electrician, Wireman, Mechanic Diesel, Welder, Health Sanitary Inspector, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Sewing Technology and Attendant Operator (Chemical Plant), among others.
With the introduction of AI, drone technology, electric vehicle maintenance and renewable energy courses, the state aims to align vocational training with industry requirements and prepare students for future job markets.
