In a large-scale verification drive, Ahmedabad Police and the Crime Branch conducted an extensive overnight operation across multiple parts of the city, detaining more than 290 suspected Bangladeshi nationals for identity verification and questioning.
The coordinated crackdown was carried out in areas including Chandola, Gulabnagar and Khodiyarnagar, where police teams simultaneously conducted searches and document checks based on intelligence inputs.
The operation forms part of an ongoing effort to identify foreign nationals allegedly residing in the city without valid authorisation and to verify their immigration status.
According to Crime Branch officials, 131 individuals were detained during raids conducted at various locations, while an additional 160 persons were brought in for detailed verification and interrogation.
Police teams examined identity documents and conducted preliminary inquiries to determine whether the detainees possessed valid records permitting their stay in India. Authorities are also investigating possible use of forged documents, including Aadhaar cards, voter identity cards and other government-issued identification records.
Officials said biometric data and documentary details of the detained individuals are being cross-checked with government databases as part of the verification process.
The operation involved personnel from the Crime Branch, local police stations and specialised units, with senior officers supervising the exercise throughout the night.
Police stated that legal action will be initiated against anyone found to be residing in the country illegally or using forged documents. Investigators are also probing whether local agents or networks played any role in facilitating entry, settlement or procurement of identity documents.
The verification process was still underway at the time of filing this report. Officials said the exact number of individuals found to be residing illegally would be determined after scrutiny of all documents and records is completed.
