Gujarat University declares Mondays as ‘No Vehicle Day’

Gujarat University has taken a major step towards reducing pollution and promoting environmental sustainability by declaring every Monday as a “No Vehicle Day” on its campus. The decision was announced through an official circular issued by the university administration and will come into effect from the coming Monday.

The directive will remain in force until further notice.

According to the circular issued by the acting registrar, the rule will apply to all university departments and affiliated colleges. Both teaching and non-teaching staff members have been asked not to use their private vehicles on Mondays. The main objective of the initiative is to reduce pollution levels on campus and lower the overall carbon footprint.

The move follows a recent appeal by the Prime Minister to reduce excessive consumption of petrol and diesel. Earlier, the university had also launched a carpooling initiative, encouraging staff members travelling from the same areas to share vehicles instead of commuting individually. The aim was to reduce traffic congestion and minimise environmental impact.

University authorities have informed all affiliated institutions about the new directive. Principals, heads of departments and directors of various faculties and buildings have been instructed to ensure strict implementation of the rule.

However, despite earlier appeals and circulars promoting carpooling, compliance among some staff members remained limited. Several senior officials and professors reportedly continued travelling alone in their personal vehicles, ignoring the guidelines.

The university administration hopes that the “No Vehicle Day” initiative will encourage greater responsibility among staff members and contribute to environmental conservation. Officials believe that regular implementation of such measures can help reduce fuel consumption and promote sustainable practices across the campus community.
