In a move to ease traffic woes, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has rolled out an experimental traffic management system along the bustling S G Highway. This initiative officially started on May 17 and targets key locations like the Palladium Mall junction and the area near Iskcon Temple.
To improve vehicle flow and create clearer corridors, AMC has strategically placed 23 iron drums around Iskcon Temple and 29 at Palladium Mall. They’ve also installed 54 plastic road barriers, including a unique capsule-shaped design that opens up to facilitate smoother traffic movement.
The project is a collaboration between AMC, Ahmedabad Traffic Police, and engineering experts from Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) in Surat. It aims to minimize abrupt stops and chaotic merging that typically cause jams.
“The experiment has been designed specifically to address traffic congestion, reduce the risk of accidents, and save commuters valuable time and fuel,” noted an AMC spokesperson. Currently, traffic personnel are monitoring the situation closely to evaluate its effectiveness.
This pilot comes as a direct response to increasing public frustration over persistent traffic snarls on one of Ahmedabad’s busiest roads. If successful—based on citizen feedback and analyzed traffic data—AMC plans to extend this model to other congested junctions throughout the city.
