The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has planned to install grill railings along 90 roads across seven city zones to improve pedestrian safety and stop vehicles from encroaching on footpaths.
The move comes as the civic body continues to struggle with removing encroachments from footpaths across Ahmedabad’s 48 wards.
According to officials, the western zone will see the highest number of installations, with railings planned on 35 roads. The project will focus on ensuring safer movement for senior citizens, children and persons with disabilities.
AMC officials said the work is part of a larger traffic management and road redevelopment plan for major junctions in the city.
Under the initiative, safety railings and roadside barriers will be installed to prevent vehicles from climbing onto footpaths and to discourage illegal parking and encroachments.
As per AMC data, railings will be installed on 10 roads in the South-West Zone, 13 in the South Zone, seven in the North-West Zone, 12 in the North Zone, five in the Central Zone and eight in the East Zone.
In Jodhpur ward, railings of 100 metres and 50 metres have already been installed near Riddhi Tower and Lotus School.
Key roads identified for the project include CG Road, Ashram Road, IIM-Helmet Circle Road, Commerce Six Roads to CN Circle, Stadium Five Roads to Sardar Patel Bavla, Mithakhali Circle, Vastrapur Lake Front, Gurukul Road and the stretch between Sabarmati Railway Station and Chandkheda Circle.
Other locations include roads near Visat Circle, Jivraj Park Crossroads, Memnagar Crossroads and the Motera-Koba Metro corridor.
Meanwhile, civic officials said Ahmedabad is currently facing heavy traffic congestion at 108 major junctions, including during non-peak hours.
Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani has reportedly directed officials to redesign oversized footpaths at busy junctions and create free left-turn lanes to improve traffic movement.
In another step, AMC plans to introduce Google Maps-based technology for traffic management.
Officials said the “Traffic Care” platform will use live traffic data and AI-based planning to monitor and manage congestion on busy roads.
The civic body added that the pilot project will use existing Google Maps data and will not require additional cameras or sensors for traffic monitoring.
