In a major food safety crackdown, the food wing of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Health Department carried out extensive inspections across the city under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Between May 1 and May 18, 2026, AMC inspected 865 food business units, issued 522 notices and recovered ₹5.35 lakh in administrative charges.
During the drive, 572 food samples were collected, of which 22 failed quality tests. Officials said seven samples were declared “unsafe” while 15 were found to be “substandard.” Legal action is being initiated against all violators.
The civic body also seized 4,218 kg of food stock worth nearly ₹10.91 lakh. The confiscated items included 2,500 kg of turmeric powder, 1,400 kg of cashew pieces, 219 kg of paneer and 99 kg of mava.
Seven establishments sealed
AMC sealed seven food establishments this month for serious violations such as unhygienic conditions, absence of valid licences and sale of unsafe food products.
The sealed units include:
- Biryani Way in Motera, sealed on May 8 for operating without a food safety licence and violating hygiene norms.
- Royal Fry Center in Motera, sealed on May 13 over licensing discrepancies and unhygienic conditions.
- Mama Dalwada in Viratnagar, sealed on May 14 for failing to comply with Schedule 4 hygiene regulations.
- Shreeji Fast Food in Nava Wadaj, sealed on May 18 due to unhygienic conditions.
- Shri Girdhar Dairy & Ice Cream Parlour in Khokhra, sealed on May 18 for unhygienic conditions and unsafe food products.
- Jay Mataji Trades in Madhupura, sealed on May 18 over unsafe food products and hygiene violations.
- Murlidhar Ice Cream & Sweet in Shahibaug, sealed on May 18 for unsafe food and poor hygiene standards.
Action against pani puri vendors
As part of a special drive targeting pani puri vendors, AMC tested 184 water samples and seized 34 carts after prohibited food-grade colours were detected in the water being used.
To strengthen food safety monitoring, the civic body has registered more than 3,700 vendors and introduced unique QR codes on food carts, allowing citizens to directly share feedback regarding hygiene and food quality.
