Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for flexible and technology-driven governance, the Gujarat State Government Employees’ Federation has urged the state government to introduce a five-day work week and a formal hybrid work policy for government employees.
In a letter to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, federation president Kirti Patel and other office-bearers proposed allowing employees to work from home for two days a week on a rotational basis. The federation also called for a structured hybrid work model across government departments.
The employees’ body said the Covid-19 pandemic proved that remote functioning in government offices can be effective and efficient. It pointed out that digital governance initiatives such as e-Sarkar, e-filing systems, the CMO portal, virtual meetings and video conferencing expanded successfully during the pandemic period.
The federation urged the government to frame clear guidelines for work-from-home arrangements, strengthen e-office systems and encourage virtual meetings to reduce the need for physical attendance in offices.
According to the federation, adopting hybrid work practices would improve administrative efficiency and employee productivity while also helping reduce daily traffic congestion between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, where thousands of government employees commute every day.
The demand comes amid growing nationwide discussions on flexible work culture, digital governance and sustainable urban mobility.
