A major fire and explosion at the MPP-2 unit of Cadila Pharmaceuticals in Ankleshwar GIDC on Monday triggered panic in the industrial area, seriously injuring two workers and forcing authorities to suspend operations at the plant pending investigation.
Officials said the incident took place during the sodium carbonate loading process at the company’s manufacturing facility. A sudden explosion followed by a fire engulfed the area, trapping two workers on duty. Both suffered severe burn injuries and were first given primary treatment before being shifted to a private hospital in Vadodara for advanced care.
The intensity of the blast prompted an immediate response from GIDC police, fire and safety teams, and forensic experts. Police Inspector C.F. Thakor of GIDC Police Station, along with officials from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), visited the site and launched a technical investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
Authorities are examining whether the incident was caused by an industrial accident or lapses in safety protocols. Investigators are also checking whether standard operating procedures were followed during the sodium carbonate loading operation and if adequate safety gear had been provided to workers.
Following the incident, the Bharuch Industrial Safety and Health Department issued a closure notice to the company and ordered immediate suspension of operations at the plant.
Officials said strict legal action may be taken if the inquiry finds negligence or violations of industrial safety norms by the management.
