The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Surat is set to operationalise its AI-enabled driving test track next week, with the rollout expected around May 12 or 13 following the completion of software integration.
In preparation, the RTO has been conducting daily trial runs of the AI-driven system alongside the existing track. During this phase, nearly 1,000 driving tests for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers have already been carried out.
Sources indicate that the firm handling the AI system submitted trial data to the department, which approved the project after verifying the results. The required CCTV infrastructure has been installed, and repair work on the test track has also been completed.
The remaining task—integrating the system with vehicle software—is expected to be completed within the next few days. Once this is done, the AI-based testing track will be fully operational.
The new system is expected to ease long waiting periods for driving tests, particularly for two-wheeler applicants. Currently, candidates face waits of up to a month. With an additional AI-enabled two-wheeler track, tests can be conducted simultaneously, helping reduce the backlog and shorten waiting times.
